A.Cooper: Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett Smith to boycott Oscars

The media can be very manipulative when it comes to women. With the the power the media has over  creating images, they have created negative image when it comes down to women. Since the beginning of time women have been seen as inferior when brought up against anyone one else. For an example, when it comes to having a female lead role in a hollywood movie, a  particular image needs to be portrayed for it to be a successful movie. They have a saying that sex sellls, meaning the more sex appeal the women has the more chance that the movie has to be successful.  So regardless how well they may act it is rare that a women gets their props when great acting is being done. When it comes to a voice, many women have them but do not use them accordingly.

According to Jaleesa M. Jones, USA TODAY,  “Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee will not be attending them, as the two announced via social media on Monday.”   Jada was thinking about skipping the 88th annual Academy Awards after Will Smith, which is her husband failed to receive a best actor nomination for his recent film as Dr. Bennett Omalu in Concussion.  according to Jones “the actress confirmed her intent to boycott in a video posted to facebook.”

Jada Stated ” Maybe it is time we pull back our resources and we put them back into our communities, into our programs, and we make programs for ourselves that acknowledge us in ways that we see fit, that are just as good as the so called mainstream, ” .  Smith added that begging for acknowledgement is an undignified act and that communities of color should not stoop to that level.

Smith is portrayed as a beautiful, strong, intelligent African American woman,  and in my opinion i feel as though she was right for what she said. Not just for women of color but for women in general. We try so hard for people to like us that we would go beyond our comfort zone just to fit in or for society to accept us.
