N.Smith Fox News vs CNN Simone Biles Story

Simone Biles and her accused sexual abuser, felon Dr. Larry Nassar

Simone Biles a USA Olympic Gymnast says ” that she was also abused by former USA team doctor, Larry Nassar’s. CNN has covered this story as well as many other news sources. On Monday afternoon Biles comes out on twitter with hashtag #MeToo. Biles states “I, too, am one of the many survivors that were sexually abused by Larry Nassar. Many people were surprised to find that another American Olympian champion had been sexually violated.

CNN analyzes this story a little bit more in-depth and takes the time out to hear her side of the story, but the question is why? Is it because of Simone Biles title or her race? Or is this story being taken more seriously because a woman wrote it and can potentially feel  Biles pain?

Fox News wrote about the same exact story but it was written by a man.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Biles described Nasser’s behavior as “completely unacceptable, disgusting, and abusive, especially coming from someone whom I was TOLD to trust.” Fox News makes it seem as if thats just what she describe it as instead of how it really is.

Fox kind of focused on Biles Gymnastics Career instead of the actual story and how she woud be feeling about this situation. Where CNN told us how she could not go to the trial because she did not want to see him and could not bare the pain.

B. Baker Biles Steps Forward With #MeToo Hashtag

#MeToo the hashtag that has went viral and left many shocked and disturbed by the astonishing names involved. The latest to come and join the #MeToo movement was 5 time decelerated olymipic medalist Simone Biles who in a tweet on her twitter account announced she too had been abused by Larry Nasser. Biles is now apart the 140 women who have come to speak on their behalf of the accounts of Nasser. Nassar has already pleaded guilty to several prior pornography charges. These two articles are both covered by two well known credible sources for news and media and thats CNN and FOX.

FOX

In the Article reported by Fox written by Samuel Chamberlain they seem to escalate the emotions of the sorrow of the USAG statement responding to Simone Biles. The picture they use of Ms. Biles shows her at a event in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. She has on this shiny leotard complimented by a matching bow that seems to make her look younger than she is. They used an abundant amount of quotes and statements in the article. They prolong to explain what USAG has done to better the situation instead of investigating why this happen. The picture they use of Mr. Nasser can be explained by many words. Words such as regret sorrowful and karma. The look on his face in that jumpsuit says it all he knows his life is over.

CNN

Reported by CNN on Tuesday January 16th, 2018 unlike Fox CNN broke down and analyzed their article more in depth. Is it because this article was written by a woman? You can sense how Simone Biles is interpreted different in this article than the other. In the Fox article they interpret her as young and innocent  but on CNN I feel more of a vibe as heroic ,strong and tough just to name a few. ”This experience does not define me a statement” by Simone Biles who released that in a statement when she came out and said #MeToo. The way CNN headlines that and goes more in depth on how even the timing of her presence in the situation is much later than other accounts she is being deemed strong for even coming out period.Even though she has accolades and endorsements she she too wasn’t afraid to say she was a victim. Their picture much like Fox shows the regretfulness of Nasser as he hears these chilling accounts of things he did over the years.

The two news sources CNN News and Fox News both show that Larry Nassar is guilty of sexual assault of 140 women including Simone Biles. Biles came out forward on the eve of Nassars sentencing on Monday and expressed on her twitter account that she two was an victim of this assault. Using the hashtag # MeToo Movement ( Source cnn.com) in the CNN news story they expressed that, ” the women were abused by the once respected doctor.” Once respected says that yes at a point he may have been respected but, now all respect is gone for what he did. CNN tells us that Simone Biles was sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar  and don’t hold any information back. CNN also says that the USA Gymnastics Association is extremely heartbroken to the fact that Simone Biles or any of the USA Gymnastics athletes were harmed by Larry Nassar horrific acts. USA Gymnastics Association  shows there deepest sympathies to Simone Biles and the other 140 women who were assaulted. By using words like ” heartbroken”, ” sorry”, and angry. Fox News copied Simone Biles Twitter posts  and it stated that she was offered special treatment from Nassar though Biles statement did not include specific allegations against Nassar, Fox news says ” says that investigators still believe Biles even without Specific allegations. Words like ” horrifying special treatment” give all reason to believe that Nassar treatment towards these women were just totally unacceptable.

This is Fox News headline of Simone Biles and it portrays Biles as being a little girl and not woman that she is. Mainly because of the way her hair is tied up in a ponytail and, the little bow in her hair. Most little cheerleaders wear things like that . In contrast CNNS photo of Biles shows her in a more mature form. She does don’t have to bow in her head and, you can see her entire body.

focus is strictly on Larry Nassar facial expression. And it shows some extreme fear and a sense of guilt and it focuses on that more in detail than the CNN news photo does.

K. Rawlings: Sexual Assault and Its Media Portrayal

Simone Biles and her accused sexual abuser, felon Dr. Larry Nassar

Simone Biles, nineteen-time medalist in combination of Olympic and World Championship competition, has revealed to the world something that she has in common with many of the other athletes in her same sport. Biles announced that she was a victim of sexual abuse. Her accusations also bring her in comparison with her peers, pointing the finger at Dr. Larry Nassar. Larry Nassar, former team doctor for the USA Gymnastics team and practicing physician for Michigan State University. Nassar, already convicted to sixty years imprisonment for child pornography and molestation, is witnessing another one of his victims, around 140, come clean and discuss his illegal transgressions.

As expected, with Biles being considered one of if not the greatest American gymnasts to ever live, the story made headlines across majority of news networks. The only issue with Biles’ announcement is in regards with the way it was printed and the intended interpretation of said accusations. As CNN broke the story, the company stayed relevant to the story, headlining it accordingly. The thing to notice about the headline is that it states that “she, too was abused”. The verbiage here is appropriate to the situation due to the overwhelming evidence against Dr. Nassar. The only issue with this article is the choice of cover photo. When the story was first reported, the photograph was zoomed in on Biles as she was finishing a routine. The cover now shows a different stance of Biles, zoomed out showing her from the side and showing her entire body. The sexualization here is increased because the focus is now off her face and now on her curves.

Fox News, unsurprisingly, reported on the story but attempted to tread around the subject matter. The headline doesn’t include any words that show Dr. Nassar in a negative light, which it should be. It states that Biles “says” she was sexually assaulted, leaving for interpretation that she might not be telling the truth, which is unfortunate. The article goes on to “beat around the bush” at the topic, making it appear as if it were not already 140 victims, and that Nassar wasn’t already convicted of said crime. It basically seems that Fox News tried to give the convicted child molester any sliver of hope he could possibly have.

K. Tatum: USAG against Larry Nassar

pic via google images. Picture of Lassar and three USA gymnasts.

In a CNN report, USA gymnasts, Simone Biles comes forward with her story of Larry Nassar’s abuse. Nassar was a doctor of the USAG who has has been accused of the sexual abuse of at least 140 young gymnasts. The doctor had pled guilty in Michigan State Court to seven counts of criminal misconduct. Many gymnasts are expected to share their stories of abuse from Nassar in court.

http://www.cnn.com/2018/01/15/us/simone-biles-larry-nassar/index.html

In a Fox News report, Simone Bile’s social media posts are shown, along with other USA gymnasts’ posts. Larry Nassar, who had been a USAG physician, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for possessing child pornography. He could possibly be sentenced to 125 more years for the admittance of the assault of seven girls. Further investigation is underway to determine how Nassar had gotten away with these abuse cases for so long. Biles, as well as the other victims, are learning how to overcome these traumatic times.

http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2018/01/15/gymnastics-star-simone-biles-says-larry-nasser-sexually-abused-her.htm

In both of these articles, Nassar is definitely the bad guy. Words that are used against him such as “his victims”, “abusive”, and “disgusting” help identify him as the antagonist. Both pictures of Nassar make him look like a criminal. He is seen as being in a court room wearing an orange jump suit. He has a sad look on his face and his posture is very bad.

The first video of Biles in the CNN report makes her look triumphant. She is wearing her leotard and she is fully focused. Her arms are solidly at her sides. She is being portrayed as being strong. CNN writes that she “calls out” the USA Gymnastics Organizations for letting Nassar do this. This report makes Biles seem strong by bringing her story to light.

In Fox New’s Report, they include a picture of Biles. The picture only includes the upper half of her body. Her hand is outstretched and she has a smile on her face. She has on glittery eyeliner and has a bow in her hair. I feel like CNN included this picture of Biles to make her look young and innocent. Girls that wear bows in their hair are stereotypically young. The glittery makeup also gives Biles a childlike persona. Cropping out her chest and other feminine curves takes sexualization away.

KMckiver: CNN vs Fox News

CNN: Simone Biles comes forward on USA team doctor.

Fox News: Simone Biles says Larry Nasser sexually abused her.

The two news sources, written stories on the famous gymnast Simone Biles. Speaking on her abuse from ex former USA team doctor Larry Nasser. In the CNN post, they stated “they were abused by the once-respected doctor.” Using “once-respected doctor” to make it clear that he’s not respected for what he did to those girls. CNN believes Simone Biles was abused by Larry Nasser. CNN tells us how the organizations says, “USA Gymnastics is absolutely heartbroken, sorry and angry that Simone Biles or any of our athletes have been harmed by the horrific acts of Larry Nassar.” Using words like “heartbroken”, “sorry”, and “angry” to make it known the team is sending out their sympathy.  Fox News, upload Simone Biles Twitter post and points out that she said, “It is not normal to receive any type of treatment from a trusted team physician and refer to it horrifyingly as the ‘special treatment.” Fox News also says, “Though her statement did not include specific allegations against Nassar, she described experiencing abuse under the guise of “special treatment,” a recurring claim from Nassar’s victims.” Fox News stating “though her state mind did not include specific allegations against” reveals that they still believe Simone even without specific allegations. The photo used on Fox News of Larry Nassar shows they wanted to catch him at a moment where he looks guilty.

Carter: Biles Accuses team doctor of abuse

Left: Simone Biles ,Team USA Member                   Right: Larry Nassar, Team USA Doctor

Monday afternoon Biles tweeted stating hashtag “#Metoo”. American gymnast Simone Biles came forward to say abused by the former USA doctor Larry Nassar. Nassar was the team doctor more than two decades as a physician at USA Gymnastics, treating young hopefuls and gold medal winners. His case illustrates the drive of the #MeToo movement to call out serial predatory behavior and the forces that enable it. says CNN. Over 140 female athletes who trusted Nassar come out to say they were sexually and physically abused by him. He was sentenced in December to 60 years in federal prison for possessing child pornography and is facing another 40 to 125 years in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting seven girls, say Cosmopolitan.

J.Seabrooks: The Simone Biles story

CNN makes headline claims that U.S. Gymnast Simone Biles was sexuality abused by former Olympic team doctor Larry Nassar. The most striking thing that can be seen in this headline is the fact that reporter Emanuella Grinberg added the word “too” in the headline implying a case such as this is all to common in the U.S.A. Olympic gymnastics team.

The “too” and “abused” being the two words that stuck out in this headline. (Source: CNN.com)

Fox News’ headline appears to be more blunt in it’s headline heavily implying that it is a fact that Larry Nassar sexuality abused Simone Biles.

Capture 2

Notice how direct Fox reporter Samuel Chamberlain was in this headline Source: (Fox New.com)

Both CNN and Fox took screenshots of  Biles’ twitter post discussing the ordeals that Nasser put her, and many other young gymnast, through. With Fox highlighting quotes from her tweet such as “completely unacceptable, disgusting, and abusive, especially coming from someone whom I was TOLD to trust.” and “It is not normal to receive any type of treatment from a trusted team physician and refer to it horrifyingly as the ‘special treatment.’ ”

CNN also chose to quote from Biles’ tweet with quotes such as

“For far too long I’ve asked myself ‘Was I too naive? Was it my fault?’ I now know the answer to those questions. No. No. It was not my fault. No, I will not and should not carry the guilt that belongs to Larry Nassar, USAG, and others.”
“After hearing the brave stories of my friends and other survivors, I know that this horrific experience does not define me.”

A link to her tweet can be located here

CNN and Fox News took photos of Nasser during his trial.

Fox News’ photo shows Nasser as the “broken man” archetype. He looks depressed and riddled with guilt which is shown through his body language and facial expression. He is hunched over. This shows that he doesn’t feel confident in this situation. His eyes are foggy and distant. Almost as if he knows how this will all end for him. The frown on his face gives off that impression as well.

It is worth noting that the photo blurs out everyone in the background so that the audience can only focus on Nasser (Source foxnew. com)

CNN’s photo seems to be more subtle in its choice of photographys of Nasser. Nasser still appears to be depressed and gives off the vibe of him feeling guilty but it is not as focused about Nesser’s facial features as Fox New’s photo of him.

The photo taken by Fox News shows how innocence Biles was when this was happening to her. Her face is glowing with life and happiness as she is living out her dreams. Trying to capture that form of innocence in her face could be a way to tell the audience that something as horrible as this could happen to anyone.

The word “innocence” is the best word that describes what the photo is going for. (Source: Fox News)

Looking at both articles objectively, they both seem very fair and handled the story in a respectful manner. The glaring thing that could be viewed as stereotype is how Fox was trying to capture the innocence of Biles as a way to maybe appeal to the emotions of their viewers. Emotional manipulations is a better way to describe it. A glaring issue but one that could overlooked without proper analyzing.

J.Johnson: Simone Biles Is Also A Victim

Larry Nasser being convicted for his crimes

In the CNN article, “Simone Biles say she, too, was abused by former USA tam doctor”, the writer took the hashtag “me too” from Simone Biles tweet and adjusted it to fit the title. The writer did this to appeal to the audience that encourages the hashtag or movement. They also say the word “too” to indicate that there were multiple victims.

Simone Biles gracefully earing a metal

In the FOX article, “Gymnastics star Simone Biles says Larry Nasser sexually abused her”, the writer makes it seem as if she could be just adding along to the rest of the stories. The way it says “says” in the title indicates that she could be lying. They also make it clear that Nasser is guilty for more than just assaulting the gymnast. He also plead guilty for possessing child pornography.

Welcome, Spring 18 Rowdies — 1st assignment

1/18/18

Dear Spring 18 Rowdies,

Welcome!

Here’s your first blogging assignment — a low-risk chance to make some points, make some mistakes and learn how to analyze the images and stereotypes of women as represented in the mass media.

Please compare and contrast the images and stereotypes of women in two stories about Olympics Gold Medalist Simone Biles joining fellow gymnasts in saying that she had been sexually molested by then gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar.

Compare the story on CNN’s website with the story on the Fox News website.  Here are the URLs for the stories:

CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2018/01/15/us/simone-biles-larry-nassar/index.html

Fox: http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2018/01/15/gymnastics-star-simone-biles-says-larry-nasser-sexually-abused-her.htm

Analyze and compare all elements of the stories:

  • Headlines
  • Photographs
  • Words — verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs — in the text stories.

Say what you see and then give a specific example of it.  Example: Fox’s photograph of Biles portrays her as a girl, not a woman, when it shows her ponytail tied up with a perky red, white and blue bow.  By contrast, CNN’s photograph shows….etc.

Here, enlarged, from the rubric on how to blog, handed out in class, are some specific requirements:

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CONTENTS OF THE BLOG

Write an objective analysis of the stereotypes you see in the stories and compare them.  Give an example to illustrate each point you make.  Include these elements:

HEADLINE/title of the blog – your name + 2-3 words identifying story

PICTURE giving credit (Google images? New York Times?  What?) to source of picture.  Also write a one-sentence caption telling what’s going on in the photograph.

URL for the story(ies) you analyze — so readers can look them up if they want.

BRIEF (brief) SUMMARY of the story, similar to the one I gave you about Biles above.

ANALYSIS (objective; no opinion) of stereotypes (at least 3) of women in the story. Describe what you see or read and then name the stereotype evoked.

Examine the headlines of the stories, the pictures used in the story and the words in the story.

NO OPINION NO OPINION NO OPINION on the issue (sexual abuse here) or stereotypes you see.  We are objective reporters and observers here so we do not include our opinion on the issue in the stories; we only say what we see and analyze, using an example to illustrate.  Be dispassionate.

DEADLINE: midnight Friday January 19, 2018

Two things when you’ve finished blogging here:

  • Don’t forget to publish.
  • Copy/paste what you’ve written here into a Word document and post that Word document to the proper D2L Dropbox folder for the class.  (It’s so I can comment privately on your blog.)

Cheers, S. Earley
