J.Seabrooks: The Simone Biles story

CNN makes headline claims that U.S. Gymnast Simone Biles was sexuality abused by former Olympic team doctor Larry Nassar. The most striking thing that can be seen in this headline is the fact that reporter Emanuella Grinberg added the word “too” in the headline implying a case such as this is all to common in the U.S.A. Olympic gymnastics team.

Fox News’ headline appears to be more blunt in it’s headline heavily implying that it is a fact that Larry Nassar sexuality abused Simone Biles.

Both CNN and Fox took screenshots of  Biles’ twitter post discussing the ordeals that Nasser put her, and many other young gymnast, through. With Fox highlighting quotes from her tweet such as “completely unacceptable, disgusting, and abusive, especially coming from someone whom I was TOLD to trust.” and “It is not normal to receive any type of treatment from a trusted team physician and refer to it horrifyingly as the ‘special treatment.’ ”

CNN also chose to quote from Biles’ tweet with quotes such as

“For far too long I’ve asked myself ‘Was I too naive? Was it my fault?’ I now know the answer to those questions. No. No. It was not my fault. No, I will not and should not carry the guilt that belongs to Larry Nassar, USAG, and others.”
“After hearing the brave stories of my friends and other survivors, I know that this horrific experience does not define me.”

CNN and Fox News took photos of Nasser during his trial.

Fox News’ photo shows Nasser as the “broken man” archetype. He looks depressed and riddled with guilt which is shown through his body language and facial expression. He is hunched over. This shows that he doesn’t feel confident in this situation. His eyes are foggy and distant. Almost as if he knows how this will all end for him. The frown on his face gives off that impression as well.

It is worth noting that the photo blurs out everyone in the background so that the audience can only focus on Nasser (Source foxnew. com)

CNN’s photo seems to be more subtle in its choice of photographys of Nasser. Nasser still appears to be depressed and gives off the vibe of him feeling guilty but it is not as focused about Nesser’s facial features as Fox New’s photo of him.

The photo taken by Fox News shows how innocence Biles was when this was happening to her. Her face is glowing with life and happiness as she is living out her dreams. Trying to capture that form of innocence in her face could be a way to tell the audience that something as horrible as this could happen to anyone.

Looking at both articles objectively, they both seem very fair and handled the story in a respectful manner. The glaring thing that could be viewed as stereotype is how Fox was trying to capture the innocence of Biles as a way to maybe appeal to the emotions of their viewers. Emotional manipulations is a better way to describe it. A glaring issue but one that could overlooked without proper analyzing.
